Sch\u00f6ller Senior Fellow Prof. Jeffrey Parsons, PhD (with K. R. Larsen et al.) published an article in MIS Quarterly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The paper \u201cValidity in Design Science\u201d tackles a long-standing issue in design science research: how to define and demonstrate the validity of knowledge claims about artifacts such as models, methods, and instantiations. It introduces the \u201cDesign Science Validity Framework\u201d, which categorizes validity into criterion, causal, and context types and offers a systematic way for researchers to plan and report validation activities. By applying this framework to existing studies, the authors show how it can clarify, communicate, and strengthen the evidentiary basis for design science contributions.<\/p>\n

The editorial \u201cRethinking Technology Regulation in the Age of AI Risks\u201d argues that traditional regulatory paradigms are ill-equipped to address the unique challenges posed by artificial intelligence, such as opacity, autonomy, and systemic risk. It proposes a tripartite risk framework and highlights the need for adaptive, technology-specific governance that balances innovation with accountability, drawing on comparative analysis of regulatory approaches in regions including the EU, US, UK, and China. Jan vom Brocke becomes President of the Association for Information Systems (AIS)<\/h4>\n

Sch\u00f6ller Senior Fellow Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke has been elected the next President of the international Association for Information Systems (AIS), the world association for research and teaching in information systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The association, which was established in 1994, publishes internationally recognized journals, organizes conferences, and thus supports the global exchange between individuals and organizations involved in research, teaching, practice, and study in the field of information systems. It has members in more than 100 countries.<\/p>\n

Jan vom Brocke will take up his position on September 1, 2025, and will lead the international association for three years \u2013 as its 32nd president and only the third representative of a German university to hold this position.<\/p>\n

Sch\u00f6ller Fellows Prof. Dr. Lorenz Graf-Vlachy and Prof. Dr. Andreas K\u00f6nig (with P. Figge at al.) published an article in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In their paper \u201cShades of Grey or Black and White? How Entrepreneurs\u2019 Use of Cognitively Complex Language Affects Investor Funding\u201d, the authors examine how entrepreneurs\u2019 use of cognitively complex language\u2014language that involves nuance, differentiation, and comparison\u2014influences funding decisions of early-stage investors. Arguing that perceived cognitive complexity matches investors\u2019 prototypical construals of entrepreneurial competence, they hypothesize a positive relationship between an entrepreneur\u2019s use of cognitively complex language and the investment amount they receive. The study introduces a more nuanced portrayal of complexity in entrepreneurial communication, accentuates the role of entrepreneurs\u2019 signals of cognitive dispositions, and introduces the concept of cognitive complexity, and linguistic displays thereof, to entrepreneurship theory.<\/p>\n

Benjamin Lochner publishes paper in The Economic Journal<\/h4>\n

Sch\u00f6ller Fellow Dr. Benjamin Lochner (with C. Merkl) published an article in The Economic Journal<\/em>, one of the leading general interest economics journals published by the British Royal Economic Society.<\/p>\n

In the paper \u201cGender-Specific Application Behaviour, Matching, and the Residual Gender Earnings Gap\u201d, the authors examine how gender-specific application behavior influences the remaining wage gap between men and women. To do so, they link the IAB Job Vacancy Survey, which contains gender-specific application information at the job level, with administrative data from the IAB. The authors show that even within narrowly defined occupations, women are significantly less likely than men to apply for high-paying jobs with high flexibility requirements (e.g., overtime, business trips). This difference in application behavior explains a significant part of the remaining gender pay gap. The model shows that the wage difference is strongly related to compensation payments for the aforementioned job requirements and that higher flexibility requirements on the part of employers are associated with greater wage losses for mothers.<\/p>\n

The article \u201cUnderstanding and Improving Data Repurposing\u201d examines the growing practice of data repurposing, in which data collected for one purpose are adapted for new and often unforeseen tasks. It develops a conceptual framework that distinguishes data repurposing from related practices, highlights the technical, organizational, and ethical challenges it creates, and outlines a research agenda for improving how organizations assess, adapt, and govern repurposed data.<\/p>\n

Two Sch\u00f6ller Senior Fellows were honored at the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) in Bangkok (Thailand):<\/p>\n

Prof. Shirley Gregor, Ph.D. was honoured with the AIS LEO Award. The LEO Award for lifetime exceptional achievement in Information Systems recognizes outstanding academics and practitioners forexceptional contributions to research in and\/or the practice of information systems. Our Senior Fellows already include two other LEO Award awardees: Carol Saunders from 2010 and Ritu Agarwal from 2019.<\/p>\n

Prof. Dr. Jan Marco Leimeister was namend an AIS Fellow. The AIS Fellow Award recognizes outstanding contributions in research, teaching and service in the field of Information Systems. Dr. G\u00fcnther Beckstein receives Honorary Medal of FAU WiSo<\/h4>\n

At the FAU WiSo Honors Night on November 14, 2024 in the Historic Town Hall in Nuremberg, Dr. G\u00fcnther Beckstein, former Bavarian Minister-President, was awarded the Medal of Honour of the School of Business, Economics and Society (FAU WiSo). The laudatory speech was held by Marcus K\u00f6nig, Mayor of the City of Nuremberg.<\/p>\n

As a representative of the Sch\u00f6ller Foundations, Dr Beckstein made a significant contribution to the implementation of the extensive funding measures of the Sch\u00f6ller-Foundations at the School. These led in particular to the establishment of the Dr. Theo and Friedl Sch\u00f6ller Research Center for Business and Society and the Sch\u00f6ller Endowed Professorship for Information Systems (Digitalization in Business and Society). Since the Sch\u00f6ller Research Center was founded in 2010, Dr. Beckstein has been an active member of its Advisory Board.<\/p>\n

Funding from the Sch\u00f6ller-Foundations has enabled FAU WiSo to establish innovative research collaborations with leading international researchers and thus make a lasting contribution to sustainable and science-based development in business and society.<\/p>\n

Almasa Sarabi publishes paper in Administrative Science Quarterly<\/h4>\n

Sch\u00f6ller Fellow Dr. Almasa Sarabi (with N. Lehmann) published an article in Administrative Science Quarterly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A substantial body of research examines the relevance of hiring as a source of gender disparities in organizations. However, there is limited evidence on how different groups of key organizational decision makers contribute to gender disparities in hiring outcomes.<\/p>\n

To address this research gap, the authors exploited the adoption of a new hiring process in a multinational corporation, which transferred the task of shortlisting from hiring managers to HR departments. In their paper \u201cWho Shortlists? Evidence on Gender Disparities in Hiring Outcomes\u201d, they find that the transfer of shortlisting from hiring managers to HR departments led to fewer gender disparities in hiring outcomes and thus increased the proportion of newly hired women.<\/p>\n

Drawing on Cybernetic Big Five Theory (CB5T), the authors examine in their paper \u201cNeuroticism and the Sales Profession\u201d in various studies whether business-to-business (B2B) sales jobs entail frequent experiences of uncertainty, which over time increase salespeople\u2019s neuroticism.<\/p>\n

In their editorial \u201cPathways for Design Research on Artificial Intelligence\u201d, the authors address some of the challenges faced in publishing design research related to AI and articulate viable pathways for publishing such work. More specifically, they highlight major impediments, use the explosion in the state of the art for large language models to underscore these impediments, propose some pathways for overcoming the impediments, and use several example articles to illustrate how the pathways can be followed for different types of AI-related design artifacts.<\/p>\n

In their paper \u201cToward a Better Understanding of Self\u2010Regulation Promoting Interventions: When Performance Management and Job Crafting Meet\u201d, the authors conducted a field experiment to examine the effects of two self-regulation promoting interventions \u2013 the Productivity Measurement and Enhancement Systems intervention (ProMES), a job crafting intervention, and their combination \u2013 on individual employee performance and innovation through selected process variables.<\/p>\n

The findings suggest that while self-regulation promoting interventions increase favorable outcomes through different mechanisms their combination may unexpectedly impair relevant processes and, more generally, overwhelm employees.<\/p>\n
